------------------------------- Named after Ireland's famous novelist, Samuel Beckett Bridge is built in Dublin,Ireland.
It is a rotatable bridge. The bridge swings right angle to pass ships.
The bridge's structure is built in Amsterdam,Netherland, and "cruised " to Dublin. On her "voyage", she passed Erasmus Bridge, also one of the most famous bridge of contemporary days, designed by Ben van Berkel who once worked Calatrava's office. In Dublin, the bridge is seconed one designed by Calatrava, following arched James Joyce Bridge, also named after Ireland's another novelist. -------------------------------
---------------- Relatively small for Calatrava, Kronprinzen Bridge is built over Berlin's Spree river. Before World War 2, there was a stone-made arched bridge, but it was demolished to avoid refugees from East to West. After reunification of West and East Germany, aided EC's fund, new arched bridge is rebuilt with same silhouette. ----------------
Calatrava's recently inaugurated Jerusalem's bridge, known as "Chord Bridge" carries tram railway. The bridge is a "Flagship Project" of Jerusalem's Light Rail Transportation system construction. Located busy Jaffa street, the bridge act as "Entrance Gate to the City Jerusalem".
The bridge boasts white, single inclined pylon, high up 120m above, and bent at its mid point. It looks like abstract woman's body bending her back. And another feature is twisted arrangement of suspension cables, which generate beautiful ,sweeping curve resembling huge harp.
The Architect says "I have built many bridges over the world, but I've never felt proud of like this ." Aided by many structurally innovative ideas, I think this is a one of the most beautiful bridge of our time.
-------------------------- Athen Olympic stadium, designed by Calatarava for 28th Olympic games in Athen, is to add new glass roof over exisiting stadium bowl. The roof is composed from two huge "leaves", supported by extremely thin arch soaring in the air. The structure of this roof is just the same as Calatarava's Campo Volantin bridge in Bilbao.
Because of its thinnness, some engineer who saw the planned scheme criticised as follows. "It's too thin. For an arch carrying such a long span , it is necessay to be the one that a bus can ride on it, like Sydney harbour bridge." Despite of his worry, the arch realised in original dimension.
The roof is constructed at the side of exisiting stadium, and slid into position. Each abut, carrying half the whole weight of roof 4000ton (for each abut) was moved. As you know, the construction was big delay, and completion was just before the Opening Ceremony.
Athen Olympic officials said the stadium as "Architectural jewel". I certainly agree that, but, regrettably, construction cost may be also like "jewel". ---------------------------
正式にはPonte della Costituzione:憲法橋、 通称calatrava橋と呼ばれている
--------------------- Ponte della Costituzione (Bridge of Constitution),or just known as "Ponte Calatrava", is only fourth bridge over Venice's famous Grand Canal.
Red coloured, extremely low arched structure caused many difficult structural problem to solve , such as high axial force of arch, deflection control, arch weakness against asymmertical load, erection method, and so on.
Because of soared construction budget, less considered for handicapped, striking appearance... the bridge caused hot controversy. Anyway, the bridge inaugurated 11years after from its beginning, though planned openning ceremony was cancelled considering opposition.
